Join the Malibu Coast Silent Film Orchestra for an inimitable evening of music and film as we celebrate the influential and pioneering women behind four hilarious silent film shorts of the early 20th century. Marion Davies, Mary Pickford, and Marion Leonard were each extraordinary women in film who significantly changed and developed the art of filmmaking, business, human rights and resources, and the role of women as independent artists, all before American women obtained the right to vote.
The incomparable Marion Davies (1897 – 1961) appears in Short and Spicy Skits from the Other Side of Hollywood: The Home Movies of William Randolph Hearst. Premiered in 2013 by the Malibu Coast Silent Film Orchestra inside WRH’s private hilltop theatre at Hearst Castle, this charming short will transport you to San Simeon, California. Once there, your favorite 1920’s celebrities, including appearances by WRH himself, will gallivant before the camera alongside Marion, creating sidesplitting skits with glorious Hearst Castle as a backdrop. The original score was composed by Maria Newman and commissioned by the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival. Very special thanks go out to documentarians Elaina Archer and Alan Boyd for literally saving these rare and precious film elements and making them available for live performance.
