Design a book that can be rolled up! Create gorgeous marbled papers and while they dry, assemble a scroll substrate. Write a proclamation, draw/paint something wonderful, or leave blank for later. Just add a hanger for wall display. Bring an apron and wear clothes you don’t mind getting a stray splash on.
Debra Disman is a Los Angeles-based artist working primarily in the form of the book. She is a teaching artist at LACMA and was recently awarded a Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs Artist-in-Residence grant to work with high school students and community members in the Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood. Disman was the featured artist for the Los Angeles Big Read in 2016, exhibiting at the Mike Kelley Gallery at Beyond Baroque in Venice. That same year she received a Bruce Geller Memorial Prize, and was commissioned the following year by the Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum to create an interactive book for “Chapters: Book Arts in Southern California.” For her Art Lab project she is continuing a series of works that progressively investigate the emotional, sensory and evocative aspects of the book format.
Camera Obscura Art Lab at 1450 Ocean offers arts, crafts and culture classes year-round. Polish your writing, take a better picture, learn how to make paper, knit, sew, and find a community of artists and movers!
