For one day only, 18th Street Arts Center’s Airport Campus will host Pile 2 patio, a giant mulch sculpture by artist Maru García.

Part of Radical Propagations
Pile 2 patio is a piece by artist Maru García that explores the materiality and community-building qualities of a mulch pile. For one day only, 18th Street Arts Center’s Airport Campus will have a giant mulch sculpture in the parking lot on Saturday, April 23 from 11 am to 3 pm as part of the exhibition Radical Propagations, on view at 18th Street’s Propeller Gallery.
This interactive and evolving piece will invite the public to modify the sculpture by taking mulch to their homes. As each person takes their part, the pile will change shape throughout the day. Once planted in each participant’s garden, the organic sculpture will take another form, transforming each garden into an active part of this exhibition and community.
This organic sculpture wants to put Soil physically and conceptually at the center of the conversation. Soil is more than just dirt. It is the foundation for healthy ecosystems and plays an important role in sustaining life. But currently, Soil is eroded every year at a rate 100 times faster than it can naturally be replenished. Exposed and lifeless Soil is caused predominantly by industrial agriculture and poor land management, making it difficult to produce food and creating other problems like biodiversity loss and contamination. Regenerative practices and traditional knowledge want us to relate better with Soil. Pile 2 patio can also be seen as a performance rooted in activism, where the audience is invited to transform themselves into Soil protectors.
Mireya Arizmendi, a soil health expert, will be giving an informative workshop on the importance of healthy Soil and its impact on our environment for this event, sponsored by Sustainable Works. The exhibition Radical Propagations will also be on view.
Plus, artists in residence at 18th Street Arts Center’s Airport campus will host open studios where visitors can see their exciting work in progress. Also, Market Exchange vendors will be on site selling their artisanal goods. Finally, artists in residence at 18th Street Arts Center will be hosting a reception for the exhibition Collective Acts of Peace, on view in the Slipstream Galleries at the Airport Campus.
This is an in-person event and masks will be required at all times inside the gallery. Please register in advance.

Como parte de Propagaciones Radicales
Pile 2 patio es una pieza de la artista Maru García que explora la materialidad y las cualidades de construcción comunitaria de una pila de mantillo. Por un solo día, el Campus del Aeropuerto del 18th Street Arts Center tendrá una escultura gigante de mantillo en el estacionamiento el sábado 23 de abril de 11 am a 3 pm como parte de la exposición Propagaciones radicales, a la vista en la Galería Propeller de 18th Street.
Esta pieza interactiva y procesual invita al público a modificar la escultura al llevarse mantillo a sus hogares. A medida que cada persona toma su parte, la pila cambiará de forma a lo largo del día. Una vez plantada en el jardín de cada participante, la escultura orgánica tomará otra forma, transformando cada jardín en una parte activa de esta exposición y de la comunidad.
Esta escultura orgánica quiere poner La Tierra física y conceptualmente en el centro de la conversación. La Tierra es más que suciedad. Es la base de ecosistemas saludables y desempeña un papel importante en el mantenimiento de la vida. Pero actualmente, La Tierra se erosiona cada año a un ritmo 100 veces más rápido de lo que se puede reponer naturalmente. La Tierra expuesta y sin vida es causada predominantemente por la agricultura industrial y la mala gestión de la tierra, lo que dificulta la producción de alimentos y crea otros problemas como la pérdida de biodiversidad y la contaminación. Las prácticas regenerativas y los conocimientos tradicionales quieren que nos relacionemos mejor con La Tierra. Pile 2 patio también se puede ver como un performance arraigado en el activismo, donde se invita al público a transformarse en protectores del La Tierra.
Para este evento, Mireya Arizmendi, experta en salud del la tierra, patrocinada por Sustainable Works, impartirá un taller informativo sobre la importancia de tierra saludable y su impacto en nuestro medio ambiente. También se podrá ver la exposición Propagaciones radicales.
Además, los artistas en residencia en el campus del aeropuerto del 18th Street Arts Center abrirán las puertas de sus estudios invitando a los visitantes a ver su emocionante trabajo en progreso. Asimismo, los vendedores de Market Exchange estarán en el sitio vendiendo sus productos artesanales. Finalmente, los artistas en residencia en 18th Street Arts Center organizarán una recepción para la exposición Actos colectivos de paz, que se exhibirá en las Galerías Slipstream en el Campus del Aeropuerto.
