Learn basics of fiber preparation for natural dyeing, including scouring and mordanting, resist techniques, and an overview of how to prepare natural dyes. There will be vats of indigo (blue), osage orange (bright yellow), and several other dyes (depending on availability) available for dyeing and overdyeing to create more complex colors and designs. We’ll talk about upcycling textiles and using found items to create unique clothing and works of art. Materials fee of $15 includes one cotton and one silk piece for each student and swatches for experimenting, and students may bring up to 2 additional items to dye. Items should be primarily (70% or more) natural fiber, including cotton, linen, bamboo, silk and thin wool, woven or knit fabric. PLEASE DO NOT bring denim, canvas, cotton or wool fleece, or other heavy fabric items like sweaters or hoodies; such absorbent “dye hogs” require a significant amount of extra dye.
