Laboratory for the Future: Composting Session
Sustainability Morning at Ishihara Park Learning Garden
The community is invited to the Ishihara Park Learning Garden for a morning of sustainability-focused fun and learning. From 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., participants can enjoy “Oh My Gourd,” an engaging exploration of cucurbits in celebration of the fall season. Following this, attendees can take part in an interactive composting session to discover simple, effective ways to transform everyday kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich soil for gardens and potted plants. Guests are encouraged to bring their own frozen food scraps for a hands-on opportunity to Feed the Soil.
This composting workshop is presented as part of artist Debra Scacco’s multiyear residency with the City of Santa Monica Public Works Department (Water and Resource Recovery & Recycling Divisions), in collaboration with the Office of Sustainability. Scacco’s ongoing project, Laboratory for the Future, examines the natural and built systems that sustain Santa Monica and the surrounding region, while honoring the often-unseen labor of essential workers.
Laboratory for the Future is a project of City Yards Artist in Residence Debra Scacco, made possible by the City of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Division, the Percent for Art Program, and the City of Santa Monica Public Works Department.
