This tour is a rare opportunity to experience Santa Monica’s Belmar History + Art (BH+A) project with project historian, Alison Rose Jefferson, PhD.  The tour begins at the permanent outdoor BH+A exhibition, adjacent to the Santa Monica Civic Center at the Fourth Street entry to the Historic Belmar Park park. Jefferson will guide participants through the multifaceted remembrance and commemorative justice project throughout which African American histories are showcased via interpretative panels by Jefferson and a large monumental sculpture by artist April Banks. Jefferson will share some of the hidden stories of local African American beach communities and how this unique applied history project came to pass. Next the group will visit the outdoor as well as nearby sites featured in the panels including the Bay Street Beach Historic District and Phillips Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
