50 Shades of Perfect (or) How I Spent My 50th Birthday

If you think your butt’s too flat or your boobs are too small, your nose is too long or your legs are too thick, your waist is too round or your hair is too dull, this is the play for you. How do we compete with the perfection of Instagram Beauty? How incredible it would be to be free of the pressure to appear magazine airbrushed, of youth being the benchmark for perfection, but rather accept that the ideal body, the perfect body, is simply…what we already have. Perhaps our imperfections are what make us perfectly unique. Turning 50 is finally the time to accept reality, verses expectation… right?!
Join us for Linda’s 50th Birthday celebration, as Repertory Actors Workshop (RAW) Shortburst® Theatre presents a one-night-only production exploring the differences between perseverance and stubbornness, frustration and acceptance. Why is perfection so important? Is perfection desirable? And perfect to whom? When is good enough good enough?
Helmed by Playhouse co-artistic director Chris DeCarlo, written by Playhouse Playwright-in-Residence Evelyn Rudie, crafted and performed by Patricia Burgos, Martin Cohen, Shannon Conlon, Serena de Stella, Bob Hucul, Heather Jones, Linda Kohn, Alexandra Lambrakis, Eleonore Nebot, Elena Pinto and Berkeley Sanjay, who does double duty as assistant director. One performance only – Friday, March 23, at 8:00pm.
Created by Playhouse Co-Artistic Directors Chris DeCarlo and Evelyn Rudie as a tool for international theatrical and cultural exchange, and further developed for use locally and nationally by Associate Director Serena Dolinsky, ShortBurst® Theatre allows non-performers through professionals to address issues of concern and discover their artist’s voice, combining movement, speech, performance art, text, ensemble work, improvisation, research and writing to create intense original productions performed for the public, with the goal of fostering a sense of community, gaining a deeper understanding of the similarities and differences in our shared and diverse traditions and cultures, and providing audiences and participants with dynamic tools to make a difference in their lives and the health and well-being of their community.
50 Shades of Perfection is supported in part by grants from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Arts Commission, the Cotkin Family, Pearl and Bill Bordy, and Playhouse PALS.
$20 ticket price includes a post-show wine and birthday cake reception with the cast.
