The Santa Monica Repertory Theater’s Second Annual Playreading Festival is exploring how we define theater.
Can we have a shared experience through technology? Are we witnessing an evolution in the theater-going experience? Come join us for a playwriting workshop, conversations with playwrights, and a live-stream play reading of a new play!
Saturday, May 16th
11am: Workshop — Crafting Your One-Act Play – SMRT Artistic Director Tanya White, outlines a process for creating a one-act play. No experience is necessary, come with your writing tools (paper, pen and/or computer) and leave with an outline of your play and a first draft of your first scene.
1pm: Discussion — Creating a Brave New World – How do playwrights create the future? Does writing for the theater limit the creative possibilities or inspire ingenuity? What about actual technology? How does an imagined world go from the page to the stage. Playwrights talk about process and what it takes to take on the possibilities of the world to come. Featured Guests: Jennifer Haley and Bridgette Dutta Portman.
2pm: AGELESS by Bridgette Dutta Portman. Directed by SMRT co-founder and resident director Sarah Gurfield, Ageless takes us to the 22nd century, where ninety is the new thirty and one woman’s fight to age naturally is a revolutionary act. This is Santa Monica Repertory Theater’s first virtual play reading and will include our signature post show discussion.
