Pacific Park - Ferris Wheel Honors Kobe Bryant

Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier will honor Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant on August 24—Kobe Bryant Day—with a towering tribute on the 90-foot Pacific Wheel. The Ferris wheel’s 174,000 LED lights will illuminate the Southern California coastline with “LA ❤️ 24” and “LA ❤️ 8,” surrounded by Lakers gold and purple and custom patterns and transitions celebrating Bryant’s extraordinary career and enduring legacy in Los Angeles and beyond.

“Kobe Bryant Day” (also known as Black Mamba Day or Mamba Day) is observed each August 24 in Los Angeles in recognition of Bryant’s life, career and lasting impact on the city. The date—8/24—honors the two jersey numbers Bryant wore during his 20-season career with the Lakers, No. 8 and No. 24, and falls one day after his August 23 birthday.

The Pacific Wheel’s 174,000 LED lights are mounted on the Ferris wheel’s structure including the 40 spokes and two hubs. The world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel’s lighting system features 16.7 million color value combinations while the programming and display software presents imaging up to 24 frames per second to display dynamic, custom, computer-generated lighting entertainment. The eco-friendly, enhanced LED lighting provides 81 percent greater energy savings than most Ferris wheel’s traditional incandescent bulbs.
