Black Business Month, celebrated in August, is a significant time to acknowledge and honor the valuable contributions of black-owned businesses. While Santa Monica takes pride in recognizing and appreciating these businesses year-round, August offers a special opportunity to show extra gratitude for their essential role in promoting diversity and equality.  Celebrate this month-long event by supporting these businesses and read below to see the incredible impact these visionary businesses have made on our community and beyond.

Gloveworx is a state-of-the-art boxing studio and athletic performance facility owned by Leyon Azubuike, a former US Nationals Heavyweight competitor. Jus Family Café Coffee Bar

The new Jus Family Café Coffee Bar sobre Bulevar Pico is intentionally designed as a gathering place for dialogue, empowerment and connection, celebrating Black culture while welcoming people of all backgrounds. Founded by Robbie Jones, a longtime Black activist and community leader in Santa Monica, the café serves high-quality coffee and beverages, with a commitment to highlighting Black-owned brands and local vendors. The space also hosts live music, community conversations, cultural programming and events centered around social justice, equity and neighborhood engagement in Santa Monica.

Berbere

Berbere serves only the highest quality vegan ingredients with an Ethiopian twist. Owners Tezeta “Tete” Alemayehu and partner Tsega-Ab “Bicko” Fenta (“T&T”) seek to inspire the community to live healthier lives and do so through their delicious Ethiopian fare.
