CommUNITY, a City of Santa Monica-recognized affinity group for staff who identify as Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC), is partnering with the City Manager’s Office to host a Juneteenth panel discussion focused on Juneteenth and how Black Americans are still fighting to be emancipated. Panelists are Dr. Alisa Orduña, a professor, practitioner, policy analyst, collaborator and thought leader in homelessness services in the U.S.; Dr. Amina Humphrey, a professor, artist, scholar and researcher specializing in race and ethnic studies; and Kyle Williams, MPA, a leader, technologist and outdoorsman whose mission is to make public natural spaces safe and welcoming to all. Speakers will also touch upon how Blacks are disproportionately unhoused, the broader meaning of home and belonging for Black Americans since emancipation, emancipation through education, and equity as it relates to accessing green spaces.
