History

Where Beach Volleyball Began

Beach volleyball’s roots run deep in Santa Monica, where the sport evolved from casual games among friends into a global phenomenon. In the early 20th century, locals began playing informal matches along the wide, sandy shores—often near what’s now known as the オリジナル・マッスル・ビーチ. By the 1960s and ‘70s, competitive play gained momentum, drawing crowds and top talent. In 1983, the sport took a major leap forward with the founding of the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) in Santa Monica. Today, the city is considered the birthplace of modern beach volleyball, a hub where both legends and beginners continue to play.

Each summer, Santa Monica’s beach volleyball culture shines during the Pier 360 celebration at the Santa Monica Pier, featuring the AAU Beach Volleyball National Championship alongside music, surf competitions and classic SoCal vibes. Home to the founding of the AVP and a favorite training ground for Olympians, Santa Monica’s courts often host some of the sport’s most iconic players—many of whom still play casually just steps from the ocean. With the Olympic Games on the horizon, there’s no better time to plan your stay and witness the sport where it all began.

For ideal conditions, mornings (8–11am) and late afternoons (4–7pm) are popular times to hit the sand. You’ll often find both casual games and more organized matches during these times, especially in spring and summer. Weekdays tend to offer a relaxed atmosphere, while weekends bring extra energy to the courts. For evening play, head to the Pier Courts, which are equipped with lights for nighttime matches.
