The Albright is honored to present “Save The Pier”, a free hour long play recounting the 1972 grass roots fight to stop the demolition of the Santa Monica Pier.
\nIn 1973,\u00a0Santa Monica City Council released plans to build a 35-acre, man-made island to host a resort hotel in Santa Monica Bay and consequently demolish the beloved Santa Monica Pier.\u00a0This month on\u00a0September 23, 24, and 25th, locals and visitors can re-live the 1973 fight to save the pier with a free one-hour performance of “Save the Pier!” at the west end of the pier.
\n“Save the Pier!” tells the story of two pier groups that worked independently to rally the Santa Monica community to petition the city council’s proposal. One group led by\u00a0Jack Sikking, a political mastermind who walked away from his Hollywood life heading up The Troubadour to instead manage Al’s Kitchen on the pier, engaging restaurant staff and guests to join in the fight. The other led by\u00a0Diana Cherman, head of the Santa Monica Pier Citizen’s Committee, who started a petition and personally solicited signatures, of which included Paul Newman and Robert Redford while they were on the Pier filming\u00a0The Sting.
