The Santa Monica Symphony celebrates music and civil rights at its Annual Martin Luther King Holiday Concert honoring the legacy of operatic star Marian Anderson. A prestigious grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) supports the concert, which will recreate the historic performance of Ms. Anderson on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1939, an event that Time Magazine called, “The concert that sparked the Civil Rights Movement.” Soprano Caroline McKenzie and the Symphony will replicate Anderson’s program of arias and spirituals. The program includes Copland’s “Four Dance Episodes” from Rodeo and a traditional audience sing-along of “We Shall Overcome.”
