Intro to Natural Textile Dyeing with Griffin Dyeworks

We’ll cover the basics of fiber preparation for natural dyeing, including scouring and mordanting and some resist techniques, as well as an overview of how to prepare these dyes. Vats of indigo (blue), osage orange (bright yellow), and several other dyes, depending on availability, but most likely logwood, madder, or cochineal, will be available for dyeing. We’ll talk about upcycling textiles and using found items to create unique clothing and works of art. Material fee includes a wide variety of resist materials and fabric swatches for experimenting, and students may bring about 4 items to dye (depending upon the size: think of an adult tee shirt as the median). Items should be 70% or more natural fiber, including cotton, linen, bamboo, silk and thin wool, woven or knit fabric.
BITTE bringt KEINE Jeansstoffe, Segeltuch, Baumwoll- oder Wollfleece, Meterware über 1 Meter oder andere schwere Stoffe wie Pullover oder Kapuzenpullis mit; diese Stoffe benötigen eine erhebliche Menge an zusätzlicher Farbe und nehmen den Platz im Färbetopf ein. Wir werden den Teilnehmern erlauben, zusätzliche Gegenstände zu färben, wenn es die Zeit und der Platz erlauben!
