Absolutely Halloween: A Magical, Mysterious, Musical

It’s the classic family theatre Halloween musical for Kids 2 to 102 – the heartwarming Rudie-DeCarlo tale of the aptly-named Candy, a sweet young girl who learns some surprising lessons about life, love, laughter, and sugar, from a delightful array of characters who take her on a magical All Hallow’s Eve adventure. Help Cattypuss, Patty Patches, Stuffy Steffy, Lester the Jester and Fifika the French Fortune Teller happily save Halloween for one more year. Halloween Cocktail Theatre: Zombies Edition

Mr. Floyd, a mixologist who has created cocktails for a bevy of award shows and big events, returns to 41 Ocean Club in Santa Monica on Friday, Oct. 24 and Wednesday, Oct. 29 to make Halloween sippables, with showmanship and style. The theme of this particular Cocktail Theatre -- Mr. Floyd travels far and around presenting many iterations of his staple show -- is Zombie Apocalypse, so prepare for a side of moan with that martini. Ticket price gets you five signature cocktails and a trio of dishes from Chef Jimmy Martinez.

Get ready to crawl your face off Halloween night! Hundreds of zombies will take over Santa Monica. Starting on the Santa Monica Pier at Rusty's Surf Ranch, crawlers will moan and growl their way through the city for spooky drink and food specials all night. Participants must follow specific rules to get through the streets: keep an authentic zombie appearance, keep arms extended, drag one leg and deliver vicious snarls with no talking. Makeup artists will be on-site to assist with the zombie-fying process.The zombies will collide at Wokcano for WOK-ing Dead 2, the official Zombie Crawl after party, with costume contests, prizes and more.

UCLA's MEChA Xinachtli ("the seed that germinates") will be hosting a presentation discussing the history and significance of Días de los Muertos.


Day of the Dead Calavera Documentary & Discussion

A screening of the Metamorfosis Documentation Project's "The Feast of the Souls", followed by a discussion, co-presented with the Mexican Consulate/Asuntos Culturales. Programa bilingüe.


Papel Picado Workshop

Learn about the traditional art of papel picado or Mexican tissue paper cutout banners. Papel picado is made especially for the Days of the Dead festivities and include skeletal figures engaged in the everyday activities of the living. Make your own papel picado banner, then string all the banners together to create colorful decorations for PYFC's celebrations!


Día de los Muertos Celebration

Altar building in front of the Library Annex. Bring photos of loved ones and items to be placed on the annual altar. The altar will remain in place through November 1st.


El Día de los Muertos Exhibition, Opening Reception

The exhibition includes art work from Santa Monica High School, John Adams Middle School, Grant Elementary and Pico Youth and Family Center students, and will also feature the work of artist and muralist, Raúl González of Mictlan Murals.

Following a traditional ceremony, refreshments will be served. Attendees can walk to the Woodlawn Cemetery to continue the celebration.


Day of the Dead

Join us for a traditional Mexican celebration, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), where family and friends gather to honor and celebrate loved ones that have passed. The event focuses on the traditions that make up this celebration of life and death. There are a vareity of ways participants can discover the philosophy and history of the day inlcuding an opening procession led by Ketzaliztli dancers, a workshop to create offerings of marigold coronitas (crowns) and papel picado (perforated paper) for loved ones who have passed, self -guided tours of the cemetery that explore the history of local famous people, a documentary on how a small town in Mexico prepares for the holiday, a traditional Nahuatl ceremonial blessing and musicians performing throughout the cemetery to honor those who have passed. There will be free admission, bike valet and parking.

Family Día de los Muertos Celebration

Music, crafts and a participatory theater presentation by Creative Playground: Dia de los Muertos: Cuentos de mi Familia, where young audience members can take part in the butterfly dance, singing, playing instruments and putting on masks to play some of the characters.


Día de los Muertos Ritual, Remembrances & Performance Celebration

Participate in a ritual ceremony to welcome and honor our ancestors and departed. Enjoy the day with us as we remember and honor our departed loved ones with live music, performance, vendors, art and traditional foods. Bring the whole family and celebrate the cycle of life!


Día de los Muertos

The café’s altar will be on display as well as an exhibit by local artists Ernie Lucero and Luis Brizuelas. At 3pm there will be a talk about Day of the Dead plus free pan de muerto and Mexican chocolate from the state of Oaxaca for children. Exhibition will remain on display through the month of November. Contact Café if you’d like to participate in the altar.


Closing Ceremony & Open Mic: The Cycle of Life in Words, Music & Dance

November 2nd, 1-3pm
Highways Performance Space, 18th Street Arts Center

Highways presents a Día de los Muertos celebration with readings by local youth spoken word artists, poets and hip-hop artists. Play a game of Loteria. A closing ceremony will be followed by traditional Aztec dancers.
